The Automatic File Maker is one of the first automatic machines designed by da Vinci. The user turns the handle, causing a weight to be lifted. As a result, the trolley on which the steel piece in need of filing rests, is motioned into place by a horizontal screw. Once the weight is released, it operated the gear, making the hammer rise and fall onto the steel. The trolley moves at a set pace, ensuring even spaces between each file.
