31.7.2008: 75 students, grades 7 to 9
This summer we held at Madatech a unique workshop for Arabic gifted students, chosen to take part in the multi-annual program of “Almomiazon” (excellence), a non profit organization.
Highly intelligent and gifted young Arabic students from northern Israel, who have scored 140 or more in an IQ test, have attended the workshop. As a part of the excellence project, these most talented youngsters have participated in a unique program that took place both at Madatech and at the Technion – Israel’s Technological Institute. There, they were exposed to the many aspects of science and many other fields, challenging their intellectual abilities.
Since science and technology are embedded in every aspect of life, the fundamental aim of the workshop at Madatech was to facilitate students’ integration in to society, and prepare them to play a major role as leading scientists, affecting regional, national and international issues. The workshop’s objective was to utilize their potential and providing them with an insight into scientific and technological culture and innovations. |
 | The steering staff of the workshop included: • Dr. Ronen Mir, Madatech’s CEO and a guest lecturer in the Technion’s pedagogical sciences department. • Dr. Irit Wertheim, head of education and visitors department at Madatech • Ms. Nadia Rashid, an experienced teacher at Madatech and at Kabul Village high school • Ms. Hnadi Yasin, doctoral student for chemical engineering at the Technion • Mr. Askhak Saleeb, doctoral student for mechanical engineering at the Technion.
Furthermore, the workshop has been accompanied by a staff of instructors, coordinated by Ms. Amira Shahala and 3 social instructors, one for every age group: Ms. Hanin khugirat (7th grade), Mr. Bassam Faress (8th grade) and Mr. Bassam Huri (9th grade).
The workshop at Madatech enabled the gifted students to experience and appreciate extra curricula substances and practice a different method of acquiring knowledge. Students attending the workshop were exposed to scientific novelties and technological innovations, theoretical aspects and practical implementations.
During the workshop, students have acquired knowledge in selected scientific issues, participated in experiments at Madatech and the Technion’s labs, built models, met with scientists and visited research and industrial facilities across Israel. Moreover, each student had to prepare a lecture on a selected topic, and present it to his group mates.
The workshop combined interdisciplinary sciences such as bio-medicine, astrophysics, genetics and many more.
